This year feels especially meaningful for our association. I am truly proud to share that the Northern California Translators Association is becoming the California Association of Professional Interpreters and Translators (CAPIT). This evolution has been a long time in the making. It reflects months, even years, of conversations, reflection, and careful planning. Most of all, it reflects the dedication of members who care deeply about our profession and about one another. As we grow into a statewide organization, we do so with gratitude for the strong foundation we have nurtured since 1978 and with excitement for what lies ahead.
This new chapter brings a brand-new digital home. The CAPIT website is fresh, welcoming, and created with our members at its heart. It is easier to navigate, simpler to use, and designed to help you connect, register for events, access resources, and stay informed. More than a simple visual update, it represents our association’s desire to stay relevant, accessible, and supportive in a profession that continues to evolve.
2026 promises to be an energizing year for our community. We are planning meaningful events and opportunities to gather, learn, and reconnect, including our Spring Sessions in April (now a favorite!), and the upcoming American Translators Association Conference, taking place in our very own San Francisco. Welcoming colleagues from across the country to San Francisco will be a special moment for all of us, and I hope many of you will join in these occasions to strengthen both your professional network and your sense of belonging. This year also brings our upcoming CAPIT elections. They are now open, and your vote truly matters. As a member-driven organization, our direction is shaped by your participation, so I warmly encourage you to take part and make your voice heard.
CAPIT is, and always will be, a member-driven organization. It belongs to you. Its vitality comes from your involvement, your ideas, and your generosity. Whether you choose to volunteer, serve on a committee, present at a general meeting, or simply attend a social gathering and reconnect with colleagues, your presence matters. Our community thrives because members step forward to share their expertise and support one another.

Congratulations to you and your whole Board of Directors for making CAPIT a reality, Olivia! I know that it took a lot of patience and hard work. CAPIT will be well positioned now to host ATA in beautiful San Francisco and celebrate 50 years soon 🥂
Kudos on making the transition to a statewide association! I was wondering whether there is a consensus on how the new name is to be pronounced: “CAPE-it,” “CAP-it,” “kuh-PEET” or…? Personally, I like the sound of “kuh-PEET” because it reminds me of “capisce” in Italian, and also of “compete.”
