CAPIT Member Spotlight: Esperanza Tello

  1. When did you first join the NCTA, now CAPIT?

Soon after I got my certification as a Healthcare Interpreter. I knew I wanted to belong to a professional association and NCTA was the perfect fit.

  1. What motivated you to stay an NCTA and now CAPIT member?

Being part of an international community of professionals is very enriching. I usually attend general meetings, and I am also part of the Spanish Book Club.

  1. Are you more of a translator? Interpreter? Both?

Although I occasionally do some translation work, I am an interpreter.

  1. What is your language pair?

Spanish and English.

  1. Care to share a memorable professional anecdote?

I could share many stories: hospitals and doctor’s offices are full of them. I love the human side of my job and the instant gratification you receive when you help.

  1. What is something notable you have learned from an NCTA/CAPIT meeting or colleague?

The workshops presented by colleagues are always interesting. I think the mix of translators and interpreters makes our association more vibrant.

  1. What do you think is the biggest challenge our industry faces today?

AI seems to be the right answer to this question. As an interpreter, there are also new laws affecting EL´s that are probably going to have an impact on the language industry.

  1. Outside of work, what can you be found doing?

Gardening, reading, traveling or cooking.
